What is BMX Street Riding?

BMX street riding is a sub-category of stunt riding, also known as freestyle riding. It involves performing stunts, tricks, and maneuvers in an environment which includes, but is not limited to, such obstacles as curbs, ramps, handrails, walls, distinctive landscape designs, and stairs. It is unofficially thought to be the most popular form of freestyle riding. It is also considered to be the most adaptable style, for riders who practice other freestyle forms, such as park, vert, dirt, and flatland, can bring their particular areas of expertise to street riding, skills which may not be applicable in other freestyle categories.

To achieve the greatest degree of success in street riding, many riders customize their bikes. Bikes that are customized for street riding tend to have some common characteristics. Many bikes used for this purpose do not have brakes with them or, if they do, they have straight cable brakes. Another common hallmark is that they remove such elements as pads, reflectors, chain guards and kickstands. Many riders also choose to remove grips for the bike, in order to achieve a greater ease in maneuvering and give the bike an overall cleaner look.

People wanting to practice street riding often inflate their bike tires to maximum pressure, even to the point of over-inflating them. Another common and recommended practice is to have a 48 spoke wheel with rims that have double or triple wall construction and axles that are oversized. Riders also typically use three piece cranks as opposed to one piece cranks, with the crank arm standard being 175 mm.

I agree about over inflating your tyre pressure. The tyres should have a smooth tread and be inflated to the maximum air pressure. Most riders run at least 100 lbs. of pressure in their tyres, even though it is usually well above the recommended pressure on the tyres. There are only a few tyres rated to that pressure.
